Researchers reveal a future beyond GDP growth
Expectations of economic growth are deeply rooted in our society. At the same time, ever-increasing consumption and production trigger increased pressure on the Earth's resources. Researchers in the Beyond GDP Growth project present findings that emphasize how important social goals in terms of welfare, social and ecological sustainability can be achieved through other means.

Digital twins pave the way for innovations in water purification
IVL Swedish Environment Research Institute has launched a Vinnova sponsored project in which the mapping of a physical asset to a digital platform leverages understanding, prediction, and optimization. The project will explore how an open digital copy of a water treatment plant can contribute to innovation in the form of new products and services for efficient and sustainable water treatment.

Increased e-commerce does not exacerbate urban traffic problems
E-commerce is growing fast. However, an ongoing research project in Gothenburg shows that increased online shopping and an associated upsurge in deliveries does not have to lead to a massive traffic increase and congestion in city centres. Instead, the service sector, with vehicles that often remain parked for a long periods of time, is the major challenge in this regard.

Every fifth product at recycling centres is reusable
A large part of what we leave at recycling centres is in such good condition that it can be sold in a secondary market. This is shown by a so-called pick-up analysis of nearly 17,000 individual products carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and Envir on behalf of Avfall Sverige – the Swedish Waste Management Association.

Roadmap to boost uptake of industrial symbiosis in Sweden
IVL together with Linköping University, Rise and Hifab, has developed a roadmap that sets forth ways in which industrial symbiosis can be developed and spread in Sweden. Mapping the impact of aviation emissions is vital for the continued amelioration of climate impact
Energy-efficient airplanes, biofuels and optimized flightpaths are today the main methods used to offset the climate impact of flying. A new report shows that it is possible to further reduce this by reaching a deeper understanding of the effects of short-lived climate pollution (SLCP) emissions.

Office recycling can save 43,000 tonnes greenhouse gas emissions
A collaboration between IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, architects, construction companies and manufacturers shows that when renovating office space purchasing used instead of new can reduce climate emissions by at least 30 per cent and costs by close to 60 per cent. On the national level, recycling could reduce climate emissions by 43,000 tonnes each year.

European study shows diesel car emission levels
An IVL-led study has compiled emissions data from over 700,000 vehicles in Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the UK. The results show that NOx emissions from diesel vehicles haven’t significantly changed between the Euro 1 and 5 emission standards, despite rigorous EU emission regulations. It is only with the advent of the latest Euro 6 standard that there has been some improvement, though new diesel cars still release about five times as much NOx as required by law.

7 600 are expected to die prematurely each year due to air pollution
A study conducted by IVL Swedish Environmental Institute and Umeå University shows that, although Sweden has one of Europe's lowest levels of air pollution, about 7,600 people die prematurely each year due to exposure to primarily nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. Each death corresponds to a loss of approximately eleven years of life. The annual cost to society is estimated to be the equivalent of SEK 56 billion.

The new logic of the EU emissions trading system
Never before has such an important climate decision attracted so little attention. After six years of persistently low carbon prices a recent reform of the EU emissions trading system may put the scheme back on track. At the same time, complementary policies at the EU and national level suddenly matter, Lars Zetterberg argues in an article for ICTSD.
