Several projects focusing on clean water in Mumbai
IVL's work focused on SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation – continues in India. Currently, IVL is working as an environmental consultant in several projects related to clean water in Mumbai, for example the Mithi River Rejuvenation Projects aiming to reduce the pollution load of the Mithi River and restore it to its original state.
“It is very positive that we are on-site in India and can contribute with our knowledge of water purification. Getting functioning wastewater treatment in place will contribute to better health and living standards for many people in Mumbai and we are happy that we are part of that work”, says Marie Fossum Strannegård, CEO of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
India, which is one of the world's largest and most populous countries, has major problems with polluted water and water shortages – something that is also expected to get worse in the future with climate change and urbanization. Mumbai with over 24 million inhabitants, for example, is one of many cities in India that has been without functioning sewage treatment.
To deal with water issues, the Indian government has initiated several major investments. One of the ambitions is to build sewage treatment plants in all major cities. IVL, who established an office in Mumbai in 2019, has been contracted for environmental management consultancy to support the work with the new wastewater treatment plants in the city.
“Overall, IVL's role is to quality-assure the design and plan for the facilities from an environmental perspective, provide suggestions for improvements and technical solutions in sewage technology and ensure that the facilities are built correctly”, says Rupali Deshmukh, IVL’s Country Manager India.
Last week, IVL's CEO Marie Fossum Strannegård and other representatives from IVL visited the projects in Mumbai. One of them, the Mithi Package-I 8 MLD wastewater treatment plant, is now ready to be used and by the end of this month, the operation is taken over by the municipality.
– We are very happy to deliver this project. IVL India is growing at a good speed, and we have an exciting time ahead, with two major projects – the Bandra and Worli Wastewater treatment plants starting in July 2023, says Rupali Deshmukh.
At IVL’s office in Mumbai India, 42 full-time employees and around ten consultants are now working with these ambitious water projects in the city.
